Scars of us by Nikki Narvaez

Kaiya Marlow has always been cautious, precise in every decision she makes. When her dark past threatens to resurface, she decides to take precautions to protect herself by enrolling in self-defense classes at her gym.

Her instructor, Ryker Campbell, is the tattooed womanizer everyone warns about. Kaiya deliberately avoids Ryker outside of their classes together, but the more time they spend training together, the harder it is for Kaiya to resist him.

Ryker's view on relationships is simple: strictly sex, nothing more. Haunted by demons from his past, he never allows himself to become attached to any woman. No attachment means no weakness, no vulnerability, no pain. He doesn't realize that his whole world is about to be turned upside down when the stunning Kaiya enters his self-defense class. Determined to have her, at least for one night, Ryker sets a plan into motion that will change both of their lives forever.

Will love be able to heal their scars, or will they be too deep to overcome?

Donna's Thoughts:

Can two people who have been hurt and betrayed by those they thought loved them ever trust and love again? Can two people who have been broken help each other heal?

“Now the only person I could trust was myself, and even that was questionable most days.”

Kaiya Marlow was abused in her younger years by someone she should have been safe with. Most days she is tired due to horrible nightmares and she is only able to trust two people, her brother Kamden and her best friend Nori and to be honest she doesn’t even trust them one hundred percent, she’s that broken.

Ryker Campbell (OMG what a SEXY name!!!) lives his life one hook up to the next. He never sleeps with the same woman twice and he will never trust one again. He’s a personal trainer and loves that he gets paid to work out, how awesome is that. One day while working out with a client he saves a young lady from falling off of her treadmill and from that moment he can’t get her off his mind.

“I still didn’t know why she affected me the way she did

– she was nothing special”

These two fight their attraction at every turn, but when she enrolls in his self-defense class to help deal with her issues it becomes hard to ignore the attraction. This book has some disturbing moments, and I would warn anyone who has dealt with sexual abuse to be warned. It also has some very uplifting moment as Kaiya works through her trauma and Ryker supports and encourages her at every turn. There are many smokin’ hot sex scenes that lit my iPad on fire as well as humor and Oh God No moments. I enjoyed this book very much but I would have liked to have seen Ryker’s issues dealt with more. I think Kaiya did a few things that would have poked at his wounds just as much as hers were. I give this book 4.5 stars and 4 hands down the pants.

“I’m not doing it right.” “Oh, you’re doing something right.” “You know what I mean. I’m not getting you off.” “Not yet, but if you keep doing that you will.”

Bwahahahaha I love Ryker!!
